In the women’s draw, third seed Agnieszka Radwanska was dumped out in the third round following a straight sets defeat to the Croatian – Ajla Tomljanovic. She was beaten 6-4 6-4 in Thursday’s opening match on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The 25-year-old Polish player exit follows top seeds Serena Williams and Li Na’s departure from the tournament.
The Russian player Maria Sharapova eased through a fourth round meeting with Sam Stosur after a 6-0 6-0 win over Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea.
Fourth seed Simona Halep is now the highest-ranked player left in the women’s draw.
In the men’s draw, the 2009 champion – Roger Federer will now face Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis in round four, while world No.1 Novak Djokovic will face 13th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
“It was tough to lose the second [set] but nice to win the match. It was as expected not a straight forward easy match and I knew Dimitry was going to try different things,” the Swiss international said. “I am pleased I found a way [to win] and played it solid until the very end.”
Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer both needed four sets for their wins in the third round of the French Open.
