Champions League Week 3 Round Up

In the third matchweek of the 22/23 Champions League season, Bayern Munich retained their stranglehold on the Group C top position as they secured a 5-0 victory against Viktoria Plzen. Xavi Hernandez returned to San Siro for the first time since suffering elimination from the Champions League against the Nerazzurri in 2010. The Barcelona boss had to endure another horrific day at San Siro as Inter Milan picked up a 1-0 victory to retain the second spot in Group C, thanks to a first-half Hakan Calhanoglu goal.

Marseilles picked up their first Champions League victory of the season with a 4-1 win over group toppers Sporting Lisbon. Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring for the hosts before Amine Harit, Leonardo Balerdi, and Chancel Mangulu added to the count. Earlier, Sporting had gone off to a dream start as Francisco Trincao had put the visitors ahead within a minute of kickoff. Despite the win, Marseilles remain at the bottom of Group D, while Sporting leads the group. Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt played out a goalless draw against Tottenham in the other Group D match.

Porto put a 10-man Bayer Leverkusen to the sword as the Portuguese side cruised to a 2-0 victory. It was the first win of the team after defeats to Club Brugge and Atletico Madrid. Club Brugge kept up their strong European form with a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid. The Belgian side are currently the Group B leaders, while Porto are second.

Mohammed Kudus gave Ajax the lead against Napoli but the Partenopei responded with six goals to seal a 6-1 victory. Napoli are on top of Group A. We have seen some surprising Champions League latest results this season, but the Reds managed to win 2-0 against Rangers and claim the second position in Group A.

RB Salzburg nicked a 1-0 win against Dinamo Zagreb as Noah Okafor converted a 71st minute penalty. AC Milan fell to a 3-0 defeat at Chelsea, which put Salzburg at the top of Group E. Chelsea are second in the group with four points, a point less than the group leaders.

RB Leipzig ended their losing streak in Group F with a 3-1 win over Celtic. Real Madrid remained at the top of the group with a 2-1 win over second placed Shakhtar Donetsk.

Manchester City rested Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden for their Champions League Group G match against Copenhagen. But they still had enough firepower in their ranks to race to a 5-0 win against their Danish opposition. A managerial change could not cause an immediate improvement in Sevilla’s performance as the Andalusians succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at home against Dortmund. The result helped Dortmund grab the second spot in the group.

Lionel Messi made history as he became the first player to score against 40 different teams in the Champions League. But Paris Saint-Germain conceded an own goal in the 41st minute to hand Benfica a route back to the game. The match finished 1-1, but the Parisians are still the Group H leaders with seven points. Juventus opened their Champions League points account with a 3-1 win over Israeli side Maccabi Haifa and rose to third place behind PSG and Benfica.
